Our Literacy subject leaders are Miss Sharma and Miss McIntosh
At Whitley Abbey we follow the National Curriculum for English. To enhance our teaching of this we use Pie Corbett’s Talk for Writing approach which successfully merges speaking and listening, reading and writing.
Our core reading scheme is Oxford Reading Scheme, but we also supplement this with other reading materials to appeal to the diverse tastes of our children. Reading real books for pleasure is what we want for all of our children. The Oxford Reading Tree website is a fantastic resource, with many free e-books which are also tablet friendly. The website is free to join.
From foundation stage the children are taught how to use phonics to read, spell and write. In Reception and Key Stage 1 we use Read Write Inc Phonics.
If phonics catch up is needed in Key Stage 2, they will be supported by KS2 staff to access Fresh Start which is part of Read Write Inc Phonics.
The website below is excellent for parent information and videos to support your child with their reading and phonics:
The Phonics Play website has a section for parents to help their children with their phonics, this is a subscription website but there are free games and advice for parents on here. We use these games in school too.
